Wolof belongs to the Niger-Congo language family, specifically to the Senegambian subgroup. It is primarily spoken by the Wolof people in Senegal and The Gambia, as well as by smaller communities in Mauritania. While the Latin script is the predominant writing system, Wolof is also written in the Arabic script for certain religious purposes and in the Garay script (Wolofal) for cultural expressions. It is estimated that there are approximately 10 to 20 million Wolof speakers worldwide.
