Azerbaijani belongs to the Turkic family of languages. It is the official language of Azerbaijan and is also used in Dagestan (Russia), as well as by communities in Iran. Azerbaijani is primarily written in the Latin script, although the Cyrillic script is still used by some speakers, particularly in Dagestan. It is estimated that there are more than 24 million Azerbaijani speakers worldwide.
