Portuguese belongs to the Indo-European language family, specifically to the Romance subgroup. It is an official language in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, and it is one of the official languages of Equatorial Guinea, though not widely spoken there. It is written using the Latin script (Portuguese alphabet). It is estimated that there are more than 230 million speakers worldwide.
