The KOI8-RU, also known as Kod Obmena Informatsii 8-bit, is a character encoding standard primarily for Russian, but it also supports the Ukrainian language. It uses an 8-bit encoding scheme capable of representing up to 256 different characters. The first 128 characters are identical to those in the ASCII standard.
