It is predominantly spoken by the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Western China. The primary script used for writing Uyghur is the Uyghur Arabic script, although historically, Latin and Cyrillic scripts have also been used, particularly in the 20th century and in areas influenced by the former Soviet Union. Recent estimates suggest that there are between 10 to 15 million Uyghur speakers worldwide.
